Cinematic Adventures: What To Binge During Quarantine

This virus has forced a lot of people into their homes for the foreseeable future. Businesses are closed and offices and schools are sending everyone home to do their work remotely. We aren’t going to have sports and I don’t think we are going to have sports for some time. You might be asking yourself, what should I do? Workout, read some books, take up painting or photography? While all those options would be productive, you and I both know that you will be lounging on your couch looking for a new series or film to watch. Well, you are in luck, I am bringing to you a very special version of our “Cinematic Adventures” series.

I am a movie and television buff, I think I have pretty good taste in programming so as my gift to you during these trying times, I am going to outline my top movie franchises and TV shows to watch during your quarantine at your residence. You probably have seen all my recommendations and if you haven’t, then you are in luck. Even if you have seen these multiple times like I have, it’s okay they are all re-watchable and enjoyable each time you watch them. Here is my top ten:

10. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia:
Where To Watch: Hulu

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest television comedies of all-time. Danny DeVito and Charlie Day steal the show anytime they are on screen. The first season of this show is alright but it really takes off upon the arrival of Frank Reynolds played by DeVito in the shows second season. The show has continued to evolve, stay relevant and most of all, stay laugh out loud funny.

9. Jurassic Park (Original Trilogy)
Where To Watch: These are going to cost you, hopefully you own them or can find them free of charge but you can get them for a couple bucks on Youtube, Amazon Prime or Google Play.

This is a trilogy that I always enjoy watching, the disparity of the first film to the others in terms of film making isn’t comparable. The original Jurassic Park is a classic and the second and third installment begin to fall off, either way, they are extremely entertaining. You might ask why I excluded the two most recent installments, Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Well, if you have to ask then you already know, they were not very good films and as cheesy as the second and third installments are they are better than the Jurassic World adaptions of this legendary franchise. It also has the greatest, most thought provoking soundtrack of all-time, JOHNNY WILLIAMS HIT THE MUSIC!!!

8. The Rocky/Creed Franchise
Where To Watch: These are going to cost you, hopefully you own them or can find them free of charge but you can get them for a couple bucks on Youtube, Amazon Prime or Google Play.

If you are an Italian from the North East you don’t grow up without loving Rocky and Sylvester Stallone. The original Rocky might be one of the most inspirational films of all time. This franchise will keep you busy, it has eight installments including the brilliant spin-off that is the Creed franchise starring Sly and Michael B. Jordan, man candy city, am I right ladies? This franchise is packed with drama, action, a good message and some of the most notable protagonists in film history. Out of these eight films, there is only one dud in the bunch, the awful Rocky V, but Sly is a genius and even geniuses have a misstep here or there.

7. Back To The Future Trilogy
Where To Watch: These are going to cost you, hopefully you own them or can find them free of charge but you can get them for a couple bucks on Youtube, Amazon Prime or Google Play. Except for Back To The Future III, that is currently streaming on Netflix.

This might be what I start my quarantine with, Michael J. Fox in all his glory as Marty McFly. This is one of the most feel-good franchises out there and the duo of Doc Brown and Marty is one of the best one-two combos that I have ever witnessed. It is fun, hilarious at times, action packed and has a phenomenal story line, score and directing to backup this awesome cast. All three of these films hold up in my estimation, the most ridiculous one has proven to be the second installment as it gives us a 1980’s view of what the year 2015 was going to be like, pretty far off from the reality we lived in.

6. The Dark Knight Trilogy
Where To Watch: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are available on Netflix and The Dark Knight Rises is available on YouTube or Amazon Prime Video.

Christopher Nolan and his cinematic brilliance saved the Batman universe, these three movies are breathtaking and brought a return to the once proud film franchise. Tim Burton gave us classics, Batman and Batman Returns (both worth watching if you want to go all in on Batman) and then Joel Schumacher nearly ruined the franchise forever with Batman & Robin, I can’t totally give him shit for Batman Returns because it was bearable but the Clooney Batman version was a sinking ship.

Christian Bale as Batman and the list of villains that Nolan gave us is something to be thankful for. Heath Ledger’s portrayal as The Clown Prince Of Crime, The Joker is marvelous. You will not be disappointed with this trilogy.

5. The Office (U.S. Version)
Where To Watch: Netflix

The greatest television comedy and greatest television character, Michael Scott. I present to you, the one and only, The Office. This story of a Pennsylvania paper company is the most laugh out loud show or film that I have ever experienced. The writing is fantastic, the secondary cast makes Steve Carrell’s, Michael Scott even better. I probably have re-watched this show no less than ten times and I still find myself laughing to the point of tears. Seasons 2-5 of this show are hands down some of the best television ever made.

4. Indiana Jones Trilogy
Where To Watch: Netflix

Let us forget about the fourth installment of this legendary film series and just focus on Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. All three of these films are some of the most fun adventure films ever. Harrison Ford is the greatest action hero of all time and he makes his presence known as the bad-ass archaeologist, Indiana Jones. The fifth installment of the Indy franchise has started production, shooting for a 2021 release, I cannot wait.

3. True Detective
Where To Watch: HBO, HBO On Demand, HBO GO

The first season of this show is the greatest single season of television ever created. Matt and Woody together, if I was to say that both of their performances were remarkable, I would be doing them a disservice. The second season of this show received a lot of criticism but I for one actually enjoyed it, the last 3-4 episodes of season two are great, it’s nowhere near as great as season one and you can tell that show creator Nic Pizzolatto rushed the second version of this show to make HBO happy but it is still worth watching. Season three returned to form and although it had an underwhelming finale the first seven episodes keep you guessing and the acting by Ali and Dorff is awesome.

2. The Godfather Trilogy
Where To Watch: These are going to cost you, hopefully you own them or can find them free of charge but you can get them for a couple bucks on Youtube, Amazon Prime or Google Play.

The greatest two films in the history of cinema, The Godfather and The Godfather Part II starring Al Pacino and Robert Duvall. The Godfather III receives a lot of criticism and it is not comparable to the first two but it still is a good film in and of itself and was nominated for best picture at the Oscars. There is nothing wrong with the first two films of this series, everyone should see them and appreciate them, films are not made like this anymore, the emphasis on character development, dialogue and the direction of Francis Ford Coppola is legendary.

1. The Sopranos
Where To Watch: HBO, HBO On Demand, HBO GO
